Some Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players are asking for a refund

2 min read

The release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was plagued with bugs ranging from weird graphical glitches to useful exploits to more frustrating game crashes and performance issues. Coupled with complaints about the game’s design, some fans have decided to request a refund for their copies of Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet.

Shortly after the game launched, threads surfaced on the Pokemon subreddit where players recorded their attempts to request a refund from Nintendo Customer Service. While Nintendo eShop has a blanket policy prohibiting refunds due to a change of mind, an accidental purchase, or because players don’t like the game, refunds will be given for defective products.

Players must contact customer service to request a refund, where they will speak to a Nintendo representative to represent their case. Most Reddit users who have posted about successful refunds say they used the game’s performance issues and crashes to argue that the game is buggy and requires a refund. User u/Hotdog_Daddy even claimed that “the representative actually told me that given the situation regarding the state of Pokemon S/V, they would raise my case to ensure the refund was approved.”

To date, players have reported successful refunds in a number of regions, with some countries having strict consumer protection laws that entitle customers to refunds when a product is faulty or different from that advertised. However, not all refund seekers have been successful, and others have said that the process for accepting a refund was intentionally lengthy.

Pokemon Violet barely runs on my OLED Switch, there are bugs all over the place, it runs at 20 FPS or less and the classroom scene just hurts me. I’m asking for a refund for this because it’s unplayable right out of the box. I think that’s not something they do.#PokemonScarletViolet

Nintendo has not made an official statement regarding the Pokemon refunds at this time. While complaints of performance issues have been widespread, it’s unlikely that Pokemon Violet and Scarlet will achieve the same level of widespread refunds that has prompted Cyberpunk 2077 to offer an unconditional refund window upon its release. Despite their issues, Pokemon Violet and Scarlet have sold a large number of units since their release, setting records not just for the Pokemon series but for Nintendo games in general.
