How much do you win by matching 1, 2 or 3 numbers in Mega Millions?

The latest Mega Millions draw offers the fourth highest prize and tickets are only $2 to enter.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 302,575,350 to 1, which means you have a higher chance of getting a blackjack than any other type of reward. But what do you get for the more modest Mega Millions rewards when you decide to play?

If you match 1, 2 or 3 numbers, you win the following

If only one number and one color match, you win nothing and may win nothing depending on which color you match.

You cannot win by matching a white number. You would have won $2 if you drew a yellow ball, which is the final number. You can use this money to buy another $2 Mega Millions ticket.

If you have 2 correct numbers, you win the following

The Mega Millions rules, which you can read here, state that if a yellow ball and a white ball match during the draw, you’ll earn $4. With that much money, you can buy two more tickets to the next jackpot for $2 each.

However, you lose everything if you just match two white balls and miss the yellow ball. When two white balls match, many people get excited before realizing they won’t win anything with this method.

If you match 3 numbers, you win the following

According to Mega Millions rules, you can read here that if you match 2 white balls and 1 yellow ball, you win $10. Additionally, you can win $10 if you match 3 white balls. There are few rules where combining yellow or white doesn’t affect how much money you win. While not much, its impact extends beyond just the cost of your ticket. You can also use your winnings to buy more tickets and enter the next lottery.

How Megapliers work

If you bought a ticket with the Megaplier option (in the places where this is an option), the non-jackpot rewards would increase up to 5x based on the Megaplier draw. Each ticket for the Megaplier option costs an additional $1.

15 Megaplier Orbs – five at 2X, six at 3X, three at 4X and one at 5X – are included in the drawing. Obtaining the Megaplier will increase all of the previously mentioned rewards. For example, you would normally get $2 if you match a yellow ball. However, if you have a megaplier of 2, your play with a yellow ball is now worth $4, and if you have a megaplier of 5, it’s worth $10.

And yes, you can match up to five white balls while the Megaplier is still in effect. So if you match five white balls for $1 million and have a megaplier of 5, you win $5 million.

Additional strategies to win

You must combine all five white balls and the yellow mega ball to take home the jackpot. You can win $1 million (or more if you use a Mega Tongs option) by matching all five white numbers exclusively. You can win $10,000 if you get 4 white and 4 yellow in a row. $500 is yours if you match just 4 white pieces. You can win $200 if you get 3 white and 1 yellow.

The odds of winning Mega Millions are less than Powerball, which is 1 in 292.2 million: 1 in 302.6 million. In October 2017, Mega Millions changed their rules and lowered the odds of winning the grand prize (it used to be 1 in 258.9 million). Mega Millions increased the price of a ticket from $1 to $2 on October 28, 2017. The game structure has also been changed. Players now choose five numbers out of 70 and one out of 25, as opposed to five out of 75 and one out of 15.
