(Reuters) – US basketball star Brittney Griner has been taken to a penal colony in Russia’s Mordovia region, a source familiar with the case told Reuters on Thursday.
In August, Griner was sentenced to nine years in a penal colony on drug charges after she was arrested at a Moscow airport with vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage in February.
She was transferred from a detention center near Moscow on November 4 to an undisclosed location in the prison. Russian authorities have not provided any information about their whereabouts for almost two weeks.
The source said she was taken to IK-2 female penal colony in Yavas, some 500 km (300 miles) southeast of Moscow.
