Gunathilaka has featured in eight Tests, 47 one-day caps and 46 Twenty20s for Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan thug Danushka Gunathilaka has been charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault during the T20 World Cup in Australia.
He was charged with quadruple sexual intercourse without consent and was denied bail in a Sydney court.
Gunathilaka, 31, was arrested at the team hotel just before 1am local time on Sunday morning.
He is said to have sexually assaulted a 29-year-old woman on Wednesday November 2nd.
The arrest came hours after Sri Lanka’s final World Cup game – a four-wicket loss to England on Saturday.
Gunathilaka was ruled out of the tournament on October 20 due to injury but had remained in the squad in Australia.
New South Wales Police say he met the woman after communicating through a dating app for a few days.
A statement from Sri Lanka Cricket said: “Sri Lanka Cricket confirms that it has been notified by the ICC [International Cricket Council] this player Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested on allegations of sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney and Mr Gunathilaka is due to appear in court tomorrow (7 November).
“SLC will closely monitor the proceedings in court and, in consultation with the ICC, will promptly launch a thorough investigation into the matter and will take strict action against the player if found guilty.”
