Black Adam is here today stream now on HBO Max, giving more fans a chance to catch the DC anti-hero film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Black Adam premiered in theaters on October 21. It centers on Teth Adam (Johnson), a superhuman from ancient Kahndaq who used his divine powers for revenge and was quickly imprisoned. After nearly 5,000 years, modern-day archaeologists free Adam so he can help save Kahndaq from the Intergang crime syndicate. However, he is provoked by the Justice Society: Doctor Fate (played by Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).
While the “Shazam!” spin-off was praised by some, many critics and fans were disappointed with the film. NPR’s Glen Weldon called Johnson’s performance “undermature” and “sluggish.” IndieWire reporter David Ehrlich called Black Adam a “lifeless spectacle” and called the characters “a cheap photocopy of one from Gotham or the US [Marvel Cinematic Universe].”
Additionally, Black Adam did poorly at the box office, earning $400 million worldwide on a budget of $195 million — which doesn’t include marketing and other costs related to advertising and distribution. However, Johnson denied claims that “Black Adam” would lose anywhere from $50 million to $100 million. In a tweetJohnson quoted financiers as saying “Black Adam” would bring in between $52 million and $72 million.
There’s still hope that “Black Adam” will do well now that it’s streaming on HBO Max for its millions of subscribers. Also, the film is making its streaming debut during the holiday season, which could increase its chances.
Another superhero film with an antihero, Morbius, was a box-office flop and embarrassingly opened twice, grossing just $163 million worldwide and $74 million domestically on a budget of $75 million. Luckily, while Sony isn’t making a satisfactory profit, Sony has a multi-year deal with Netflix, so the film was at least a success. Morbius made Netflix’s top 10 list when it debuted on the service in September.
